Daedelus - Curtains Don’t Talk

Daedelus is one of the most respected beat producers in the avant garde scene. After he quickly rose to fame with his off-kilter music, I often wonder if his lack of conformity is his own worst enemy. Not that I don’t appreciate how he is always pushing the envelope, but I have a feeling his music soars over a lot of heads. Well, Daedelus takes a crack at a more accessible remix today, without dumbing down his sound in even the slightest. While the original is nearly unrecognizable, Janet Jackson’s voice does shimmer on this fabulous “Curtains” remake.”

Santigold - Disparate Youth

“Last month, Santigold gave us “Big Mouth,” her first new single in forever. And today, she follows it up with another new one from her forthcoming album Master Of My Make-Believe. This one is called “Disparate Youth,” and it’s a catchy and bottom-heavy new-wave track that could’ve fit in just fine on her first album. She’s posted a video for the track that animates the single’s cover art just slightly; […] “Disparate Youth” will be available on iTunes tomorrow, along with remixes by Switch, the 2 Bears, and Amateur Best.”

M.I.A. - Bad Girls (prod. by Danja)

“Aside from an Amy Winehouse tribute song and working on a forthcoming collaboration with Madonna, M.I.A. remained fairly quiet in 2011, apparently hard at work on the follow-up to 2010’s poorly received “/\/\ /\ Y /" In anticipation of her fourth full-length, the singer released “Bad Girls,” a new single that is a reworked version of a track on her “Vicki Leekx” mixtape.

“Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well,” M.I.A. sings on the hypnotic hook, which is unfurled over a midtempo thump provided by producer Danja. According to Pitchfork, the new version of “Bad Girls” will hit digital retailers Tuesday (Jan. 31), and a video for the song will premiere on Friday.”

Flying Lotus,
Los Angeles (Alt. Take - Mix 2)

Flying Lotus - Mister Murky Socks

Flying Lotussoundcloud got a little cloudier last night with the uploadification of this grumpily awesome new track “Mister Murky Socks.” This is definitely one of those instances where it seems like a totally random abstract title until you actually hear the track and be like, Hmm sounds like murky socks. Turns out though, that Mister Murky Socks might actually be “Roberta Flack” with a sex change. Stream below and cop his 2008 LP Los Angeles to compare.”

“In all honesty, we’re not exactly sure how UK outfit Africa Hitech found the time to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Earlier this year, the duo of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek released its debut album, 93 Million Miles, and now, the pair is about to wrap up a lengthy North American tour, which actually comes to an end this weekend with a string of West Coast dates. In the middle of all this intercontinental activity, Africa Hitech did manage to assemble this podcast, pulling heavily from two genres in particular: footwork and drum & bass. While those genres are rarely uttered in the same sentence, the similar tempos and shared reliance on frantic percussion actually allow these seemingly disparate styles to mesh together quite nicely, a phenomenon that Africa Hitech explores at length on this mix. As one might expect given the genres involved, the mix is a wildly upbeat and energetic listen, but, more importantly, it shows that even in a post-everything electronic-music landscape, there are still exciting new sound combinations to be discovered.”

Key words here: “footwork and drum & bass” - just listen, you’ll thank me later (No Drake-o).

(Above: Jazzanova)

“Remember when jazz was a so-called “dance” music? When swing drove masses to ballrooms and inspired popular dances like the Lindy Hop, Charleston and Jitterbug?

Probably not; most of us will never know what the ’30s and ’40s were like, when jazz was more than a spectator sport. But in this age of electronic music, with sampling and loops, getting down to jazz sounds isn’t so uncommon — sampled saxophones and ride cymbals have re-emerged in dance halls in innovative forms of house music. Here are few successful fusions of jazz and electronica.”

SBTRKT - Hold On (Live)

“It has been a while now, but I still haven’t stopped listening to SBTRKT‘s self-titled debut LP at least a few times a week. It’s an incredible picture of what U.K. future sounds have to offer and it’s fun as hell. Not only is he a wizard with his laptop created productions, but he’s a damn good performer and drummer too. He’s bringing his live show stateside in October and November so be sure to try and check that out. Here, thanks to BBC, we get some video of album cut “Hold On” performed at Reading Festival with buddy Sampha providing the live vocals.”
